Blocking
If an attack is determined to penetrate a player's armor class, then the player may attempt to block the attack if they have a shield equipped. If the attack
is magical and the player has any amount of resistance to that type of magic (fire/lightning/magic), they may not attempt to block. If it is of a magical
type that they do not have resistance to, they may attempt to block. If an attack is determined to be blocked, the player will enter the blocking animation
in which they cannot move, attack, or cast spells (or block). Although blocking rates vary between character classes, the "fast block" affix will set blocking
speed to 0.10 seconds (2 frames). Warriors naturally have this blocking speed.
Monsters will never block an attack even if they appear to have a shield equipped.
The % chance for a player to block:
% = Dex - 2*(mlvl-clvl)
By this formula it is possible to achieve 100% chance to block or greater, called "perfect block". This means that as long as the character is in a condition
that permits blocking, the character will always block. This formula is also used to dertime the chance to block magical attacks assuming the player has
no resistace to the type of magical attack. Even with a 100% chance to block, a player still must be eligible to block, which is based on the following rules.
A player cannot block while:
- Walking or casting a spell.
- They are in hit recovery
- They are currently blocking.
Even with perfect block, a player may still be hit by an attack if it penetrates their armor class and they are doing one of the above. At that point, they
may or may not immediately enter hit recovery based on the conditions for stun.
Perfect Block
Blocking can be very important to all three character classes, especially warriors. Below is a table that will display the amount of dexterity needed
to achieve perfect block.
- Difficulty: view values for a given difficulty
- Block %: Change this to diplay Dex needed to achieve the selected blocking percentage
- To view values for a specific character level, select it from the final column
- Perfect block is compared to the toughest melee enemy, the Blood Knight
